Emma Rowland MA; BA (Mus) Oxon At the helm of Allegra is the vibrant and passionate Musical Director, Emma Rowland.
Emma’s vast musical experience and training began as a student at Caerleon Comprehensive School. During her schooling, Emma performed as part of the prestigious National Youth Choir of Wales, and Emma broadened her horizons by attending New York State University at Fredonia on a summer choral singing programme overseen by acclaimed Professor and Composer Don Lang. This inspired Emma to begin composing herself, and to further her education in music. Emma achieved her Degree at Oxford University’s St Catherine’s College, and there conducted the Oxford Student Chorus, the only cross-college choir at the University.
During this time Emma began to refine her composition skills, developing music specifically for choral performance, and one such composition, Autumn, was performed at the 2002 9/11 Memorial Service in New York. Following her Degree, Emma achieved a Masters in Music and began studying for her PhD. As a conductor, Emma uses her expertise to extend her choirs’ repertoires to include a variety of genres, and she arranges most pieces to suit participants’ strengths.
For the last few years Emma has been working as a vocal coach and composer and runs her own successful music and drama business with her husband. She has conducted several choirs and was responsible for setting up Allegra Ladies’ Choir. Emma has been an inspiration during the last year and directly enabled the choir to reach its current standard. She has firm plans to take the choir forwards in the coming years.
